Mobile Messaging Survey at HIMSS and Enterprise Connect: The Threat of Unsecure Mobile Messaging is Real

Survey finds that employees’ lack of education on mobile message security signals trouble for businesses.

CHICAGO – April 5, 2016 – A survey of the attendees at the recently concluded HIMSS and Enterprise Connect, conducted by Infinite Convergence Solutions, Inc., a next-generation mobility and messaging solutions provider, provided a deeper insight into the state of mobile messaging for business communication.

Pertinent to the Healthcare and Enterprise Communication spaces, mobile messaging has increased in prevalence, but there are still security concerns. The survey results find that 51 percent of employees claim their preferred mobile messaging platform at work is secure. However, 73 percent of employees also note they prefer to use SMS/MMS or consumer-facing messaging apps, like WhatsApp, iMessage or Skype. These apps do not have the necessary enterprise-grade security and control measures in place – a key feature that employees may be overlooking.

“What’s most concerning about our survey is that employees don’t seem to know or completely understand the difference between a messaging app that you use in your personal life and one that is equipped to handle the exchange of sensitive business communication,” said Anurag Lal, CEO and president of Infinite Convergence Solutions. “This points to a lack of employee education on secure mobile messaging, which is critical for businesses to implement if they want to keep their information secure.”

The survey was based on responses of attendees at Enterprise Connect, the largest enterprise IP, telephony, converged networks and unified communications conference, and HIMSS, an IT conference for the healthcare industry. Survey participants included high-level executives, including CTOs, CEOs, CIOs and directors, among others.

“Educating employees on new technologies to improve their efficiency and protect business information is a top-down approach, meaning those in the C-Suite and managers need to recognize the threat of unsecure mobile messaging is real,” said Lal. “Without the support from executives, it’s impossible for the IT department to implement communication tools as powerful as mobile messaging, which is secure and provides the necessary safe-guards and control that enterprise needs to protect sensitive business information and be complaint to industry regulations, such HIPAA in case of Healthcare.”
